Lets be real, video card power adapters can be a real headache.  Especially if you are attempting to install a high end graphics card in an OEM system that doesn’t have an ATX Power Supply installed in to it.  One of the most common questions that we receive is, “What power adapter cables do I need to install my new graphics card?”.  That question is normally answered with another question, “What wattage is your current power supply?”.  We request the wattage information to make sure the system is capable of accommodating the graphics card.  Good gaming video cards can require 150W to 400W of power.  That is why it is so important to make sure the client has enough wattage on their power supply to accommodate the new video card. At GreenPCGamers.com, our recommendation is to install a power supply with 650 watts or more to accommodate most video cards.  However, there are instances where you might need 750 Watts or more to accommodate your video card.

Example:  GTX 1080 TI, RTX 2080, RTX 2080 TI, and Titan Cards may cause intermittent shut does under stress if your power supply is 650W or under.  The shutdowns can be caused by a combination of cpu’s, components, and video cards.  It won’t hurt to install an 800W + power supply if it is possible.

Once we establish that the system can accommodate the new graphics card we have to be creative about the power adapters we use.  Not all systems are alike, and that is why we keep all the options available.  It is a good idea to verify what power connection(s) your new graphics card will require prior to ordering it.  That way you can be ready when you get the graphics card.  Nobody wants to wait 3-5 more days for  video card power adapter to arrive so they can finally install their new video card =).
